Optimizing the Performance of Uncoordinated Wireless Packet Transmission: RP-CDMA with Partitioned Spreading

A fully asynchronous random wireless channel access protocol and transmission system based on CDMA with random spreading, termed Random Packet CDMA [1, 2], is presented. We show that RP-CDMA has the potential to achieve the capacity of the wireless channel. Furthermore, a novel non-linear receiver termed Partitioned-Spreading (PS) is introduced, which allows for significantly higher system loads than other joint detection schemes. Partitioned Spreading operates with simple matched-filters and multi-stage cancellation, making it an ideal candidate for implementation in low-power, low complexity wireless nodes. As the system load increases, Partitioned Spreading is able to harness the throughput advantage of RP-CDMA.
